Quality problems notwithstanding, laboratory users should read and understand the SDS before beginning work with the chemical. SDSs contain information that may be critical to the safety of the experiments undertaken; not noting relevant information can be the root cause of an incident. In one incident, a researcher neglected to read the SDS provided with a catalyst purchased from a major supplier, which plainly stated that the material was capable of igniting flammable solvents if allowed to partially dry. During his experiment, the researcher abandoned the catalyst after filtering it, where it partially dried and ignited the methanol solvent used; the resulting fire did $50,000 damage to the building.
